"Working on emotional regulation with Mila has been truly transformative. She helped me run through everything I had been feeling (which felt like a bit of a tangled mess when I started) and gave me the science behind what was going on in my brain that was making me feel like this. This was very comforting. The sessions were a great outlet for everything I had been feeling, the low mood, the suicidal thoughts, the inability to be at work and the overwhelm I felt from social situations or telling people how I felt.

"I hadn't heard of EMDR before reaching out for support to manage my response to a traumatic incident. I admit I was very sceptical initially as I didn't understand how it would be possible for the techniques to reprocess my thoughts and help me deal with what I was going through. I had felt incredibly overwhelmed by how bad I was feeling and that I didn't feel like me anymore. It also seemed like that any of my regular tactics to feel better weren't helping me.
However, I felt hopeful with how Mila explained EMDR, the resources she gave me to learn more about it and ultimately the further reassurance that it's also recognised and recommended by NICE.

It was difficult to let myself be back in the memories causing the trauma but Mila made sure she created a safe space and helped me ground myself when the emotional response was intense at times. However, facing the memories was so worth it and I wasn't dealing with it by trying to ignore it - and it wasn't letting me ignore it anyway. In the space of a few sessions, there was a huge shift and reduction of the intrusive thoughts, the regular emotional breakdowns and feeling unable to view myself as anything other than pathetic because of how I felt.
I can genuinely now think of things like the memories and things that had been overwhelmingly triggering and I'm actually OK. I accept they happened. It doesn't mean I'm not ever sad or unhappy that they happened because it was not a good time and it's been really, really hard. However, I can reflect on it and understand that what happened then doesn't mean it's happening now. It’s been great to have a mix of the EMDR and CBT and then to also have the supporting resources (PDFs) to refer back to as well.
